Academic and Career Planning Information

4 stages of Successful Academic and Career Planning. 1. Know 2. Explore 3. Plan 4. Go!

What are Academic Career Plans (ACPs)?

Academic and Career Planning, or ACP, is a student driven, an adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills.

- WI Department of Public Education

PI-26

PI-26 is the legislation that requires Academic and Career Planning to take place in all public schools in the State of Wisconsin.  Each school district must provide evidence of their implementation of PI-26. The following page showcases what Cashton School District is implementing for the development of our student driven Academic and Career Plans.

Advisement Teams

All students in grades 6-12 connect with a faculty member for Academic and Career Plan advisement sessions. These occur once per month throughout the school year. Students are placed on a middle school or high school advisement team. They use this time for career exploration, goal writing and reflections, future financial planning, scholarship and college applications, and scheduling of future classes.

Academic and Career Planning Topics

Pathways of Study (POS)

Pathways of Study (POS) align classes with students’ potential career interests. Students may utilize Pathways of Study in planning and scheduling for high school courses, lining up internships, and participating in job shadow opportunities

Job Market Needs

Labor market information suggests that the three largest industry sectors by jobs in Monroe County were the Education & Health Services; Trade, Transportation, & Utilities; and Manufacturing sectors. Together, these sectors represented 55.8% of jobs in 2016 and are expected to continue as the three largest sectors in 2026. The Trade, Transportation, & Utilities sector is projected to gain more jobs than the other two leading sectors. Overall, there are 11,749 more jobs projected in 2026, a 7.3% increase from 2016. Therefore, the School District of Cashton provides students the opportunity to participate in Youth Apprenticeships and Dual Credit courses related to these fields.

Students are provided with information and guidance to make decisions about their educational and career path. Activities in Xello, college and career exploration events, self assessments, and dual credit coursework prepare students in the School District of Cashton for life after high school.

High school students are also encouraged to participate in a job shadow with a person who works in a field related to the student’s career interest. Students may also participate in program shadows at technical colleges.
